Bhagirathi Mali are primarily found in Western Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Delhi. They belong to the Shudra Mali caste. They associate themselves with communities such as Maurya, Kushwaha and Shakya and describe themselves as Suryavanshi. In Western Uttar Pradesh, they use the Saini surname. Other Saini consider them to be fake Saini, and it is said that Shoorsaini (the original Saini) did not marry girls from their community with Bhagirathi Mali.
The traditional occupation of Bhagirathi Mali is vegetable farming and flower cultivation. In ancient times, they were also known as "Phool Mali." It is said that in 1937, when the "Sainik Kshatriya Mali" Thakurs of Jodhpur, Rajasthan, began using the name Saini, Bhagirathi Mali also started using the Saini name.
Their Dispute with the Rajput (Thakur) Community of Uttar Pradesh: Their dispute is with the Rajput (Thakur) community of Uttar Pradesh. These people, described here as fake Saini, claim Raja Sagar, Raja Harishchandra and Raja Bhagirath as their own, which has led to disputes with the Thakur community.
The Kshatriya Thakur community has opposed them from time to time and has prevented statues of Raja Bhagirath and Raja Sagar from being installed in their villages. The Kshatriya Thakur community states that the fake Saini are stealing the history of the kings and Maharajas belonging to the Thakur community. Because of this, the Thakur community opposes the fake Saini in Western Uttar Pradesh.
The Thakur community also states that Bhagirathi Mali describe Mahatma Jyotiba Phule as a great historical figure of their community while also identifying themselves as Saini. According to the Thakur community, Mahatma Jyotiba Phule belonged to the Mali caste; therefore, they question how Bhagirathi Mali can identify themselves as Saini.
Major historians of India consider Bhagirathi Mali to be an ancient community. People belonging to this community are primarily found in Western Uttar Pradesh. The people of the Bhagirathi community were also known as Sagarvanshi and the main reason for this was their claimed connection with Raja Sagar and Raja Bhagirath, who belonged to the Sagar lineage.
The descendants of Raja Bhagirath, who brought Mother Ganga to Earth, are referred to as Bhagirathi Mali. This community is described as a sub-community of the Thakur Kshatriya caste.
Before 1985, the Bhagirathi Mali of Western Uttar Pradesh identified themselves as Mali. Their villages and towns were also known by the name "Maliwada." The Uttar Pradesh Government placed Bhagirathi people in different categories; however, when they began identifying themselves as Mali, they were placed within the Mali caste category.
Later, they began associating themselves with the Saini caste and today they consider themselves to be a part of the Saini community.
At present, Bhagirathi identify themselves as Suryavanshi and claim connections with the Maurya, Kushwaha, Shakya and Mali communities. Bhagirathi have also increasingly come to consider themselves Mauryavanshi. They also associate themselves with Buddhism.
Bhagirathi have changed their surnames from time to time. First Mali, then Bhagirathi, then Saini and now Maurya, Kushwaha, Shakya and others.
The Government of India has placed them in the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category.
